Monumental Pair of Console Cabinets in Oak and Ebony Wood

About the Item

Monumental pair of console cabinets dating to the late 19th century. The consoles come with their fully documented history. Designed in 1879, manufactured between 1880 and 1882 and finished in 1882. Consoles are made up of six individual parts displaying multiple creatures and sculptures: Base: Displaying a snake being eaten by Sea monster in the centre, pillars with leaves on the side. The upper rim has a figure of a lady in the centre and two bearded men on the sides. Made of oak and ebony Part 2: Displaying a pair of cherubs riding a fish. Magnificently sculptured in oak. Part 3: Displaying beasts around a vase. In oak and ebony Part 4: Displaying pillars and fruit on the side. The centre is made up of two panels with inlaid ebony. Part 5: Displaying an Angel in the centre and two devils on the side. All sculpted completely from oak in a single piece. Ribbons on the side. Panels are also made of oak with inlaid ebony wood. Top: Displaying a magnificent crown with a hallmark (six stars above a castle), flanked by cornucopia on both sides, fruits and fruitbaskets, on top of a sculptured roof. Both consoles are identical. The consoles have undergone a big restoration over the period 2013-2016. They are restored completely to their original condition and plans of the late 19th century.
