Edwardian Mahogany Five-Drawer Writing Desk

About the Item

This English mahogany writing desk was made during the Edwardian period around the year 1910. It features five drawers that extend all the way to the back of the desk making the drawers quite large and spacious. As with many Edwardian pieces, the mahogany of this writing desk is inlaid with satinwood around the top and drawer fronts. Furthermore, the front corners of the top and apron are inlaid with satinwood fans. Finally string inlay on the front of the front legs finishes off the look. The desk top has a brand new black leather surface. The black leather is tooled in gold and makes a wonderful contrast to the mahogany wood. Leather makes a great writing surface and provides a warm charm to the piece. While each drawer has a lock, there is no key for this desk. Each drawer does open and close easily. Inside, some of the drawers have minor age separations, which is common for solid wood pieces of this age. The centre drawer has some old black tape someone used to prevent things from falling out of its separation. Overall, this writing desk has many small distressing marks incurred throughout the years. Small dings and marks can be found throughout. Some of the worst marks are on the small apron, but have been touch up to blend in nicely. A small piece of inlay is missing from the top of the right front leg. Both the left and right sides have age separations to the wood. Again, these are cosmetic only. All of these small marks lend the piece character, rather than detract from it. The distance from the floor to the bottom of the desk is 23" and the knee hole is 24.25" wide at the widest point.
