Exhibition Quality Mahogany Cylinder Bureau by Maple & Co

R031 Superb quality and very attractive, Edwardian flamed mahogany cylinder bureau by Maples & Co, two mahogany lined and satinwood crossbanded drawers fitted with original brass handles above a cylinder flamed mahogany front which open to reveal small drawers, inkwells, pen tray and green tooled leather writing section, the base having long frieze drawer fitted with original brass handles, all standing on elegant string inlaid legs terminating in original cup castors, all polished and inlaid throughout enabling free standing. This fantastic desk retains its original finish, colour and patina, all in home ready condition. c1900 H39.5" H27.5"-writing surface W30" D19" H100cm H70cm-writing surface W77cm D48cm Maple & Co was established by John Maple and continued by his son John Blundell. The company was most prolific in the late Victorian and Edwardian era, specialising in fine quality furniture, designed and produced in their own workshops. By the 1880s they were the largest furniture store in the world, exported their fine furniture to every continent. Maples manufactured their luxury furniture entirely in-house, at a huge modern complex in Tottenham Court Road. A timber importer and furniture exporter, they landed prestigious contracts furnishing fine houses, hotels, embassies etc. Among them Tsar Nicholas’s Winter Palace and the Hofburg Imperial Palace in Vienna. Never compromising on quality, Maples produced a huge catalogue of fine furniture, covering every avenue of interior design.

    Here we have a very large and impressive late Victorian cylinder bureau made by the well-known and much sought after Victorian cabinet maker and retailer Edwards & Roberts of Wardour Street, London. Our antique furniture experts have dated this Victorian cylinder bureau to have been made around 1880. The desk has been fully and meticulously restored by craftsmen in our own workshops and we consider it to be of “museum quality”. This lovely Victorian Cylinder Bureau would make a bold statement wherever it was situated. Anyone who selects a piece of furniture this impressive to make their place of work will know that this cylinder bureau not only looks good but is also extremely practical. Just look at the copious amount of storage that is on offer for a start. As you can see by looking at the range of photographs supplied, the Bureau houses numerous cupboards as well as a range of drawers of varying sizes and capacity and numerous other storage areas to accommodate copious amounts of stationery, books, office supplies and anything else that you like to have at hand when working. The cylinder bureau can be positively attributed to the makers and suppliers Edwards and Roberts of London as it has a plate showing their name, as can be seen in the gallery of photographs. The retractable top encloses a neatly fitted interior comprising six small drawers together with a bank of pigeon holes.
