Rare Georgian Irish Mahogany circa 1760 George III Architects Writing Desk Table

We are delighted to offer for sale this very rare original George III circa 1760 Architects writing Georgian Irish table desk in solid mahogany with original lock and key A beautiful find with the original well used patina throughout. As you can see you have a very tidy looking writing table which houses a campaign-style secretaire compendium drawer, the drawer slides out, all legs have hidden carved spindle legs inside with castors so the sliding action is faultless The drawer once extended has a dual action writing top, this piece can be slid back inside the main body of the desk so you have full access to the drawers or you can simply lift the central flap and have quick access to less space The desk top is secured via a depression switch to the rear, press the button and the whole top lifts, it can be seated in one of five positions, as you raise the top amount for holding paperwork rises at the base of the slope and produces out the front The piece has been deep cleaned hand condition waxed and hand polished from top to bottom, it will have normal patina marks here and there consistent with fair use and honest age, the piece can be fully restored to include a complete French polish for around £400 This era-defining piece of Georgian furniture gained popularity in the early eighteenth century owing to the explosion of interest in classical architecture. The Palladian revival popularised by Colen Campbell with the release of his Vitruvius Britannicus between 1715 and 1725 was supported by rich and influential benefactors such as the Earl of Burlington whose interest stretched much further than the ability to commission property. Numerous landed gentry were only too eager to try their hand at architectural design and many country houses in the UK carry the influence of their original owners. Architectural publications such as Batty Langley’s “Treasury of Designs” served as the crossover from architecture to furniture design and writing tables with ratcheted tops appear in the first edition of Chippendale’s Director in 1754. Ince & Mayhew’s “Universal System of Household Furniture” provides similar designs which bear closer resemblance to this piece where they are considered as “writing and reading tables” reflecting the enormous enthusiasm for learning and knowledge during the years of the enlightenment. Their inclusion in both of these influential works is testament to their popularity and the growing interest in metamorphic furniture that peaked in popularity during the Regency period.
