Vintage French Louis XIV style "Cardinal Mazarin" Writing Table of Burl Ashwood, Gilt Metal Mounts, circa 1930 with a hand tooled leather writing surface. This visually striking table was named after the regent of France who served the future Louis XIV before he ascended to the throne. The key element that always distinguishes this type of desk or writing table is the use of four legs at each end of the desk all joined by a shaped stretcher. In this particular table all eight of the legs are of square profile with a slight taper that possess a unique architectural presence while they support the body of the table that contains the drawers. Unusually the stretchers are totally flat with an angular profile that reinforce the bold angular appearance of the entire piece. The beautifully pale colour of the ashwood accentuates the random pattern of the burl which appears darker in colouration. By sheathing the entire table in this unusual material the maker ensured that the desk could be used anywhere in an interior because it presents an exceptional appearance when viewed from any direction. There are seven drawers in the table with the centre section containing a single drawer that enables a chair to be pulled easily up to the front with both the left and the right having three drawers and all seven drawers have the original gilded metal pulls. The entire edge of this table is bound by a gilded metal border and set with a sculpted corner that rises above the edge itself. The use of this protective metal edge was seen quite often in eighteenth century French furniture which is why it is appropriate and correct on this vintage example. The writing surface on this table is the most plush leather hide and features a hand tooled embossed pattern around the entire perimetre highlighted with hand applied gilding. This subtle segue from the pattern of the burlwwod to the smooth area of the writing surface adds a handsome note.
