Small 18th Century Oak Dresser Base
About the Item
A Charming 18th Century, Georgian, Oak Dresser Base Sideboard Of Attractive Small Proportions, Having Rectangular Plank Top Over Six Drawers Retaining Original Brass Swan Neck Handles And Elegant Shaped Frieze, Raised On Baluster Turned Upright Supports With Original Panelled Potboard Shelf And Elegant Spanish Design Shaped Feet.
Overall this dresser base is an extremely sweet size, perfect for a wide ranging variety of spaces around the home, due to its narrow proportions amongst other things. It is also very elegant and retains an excellent rich colour and patina, a consequence of years and years of hard graft and use, combined with love and care.
As suggested by the name the original purpose of a potboard shelf was to store all manner of pots and pans. These pots and pans were often still wet, very heavy, or possibly still hot when placed back onto the storage shelf and this is the reason that we regularly find potboard shelves replaced on antique dresser bases. The potboard shelf on this example is however original which is a nice feature.
There is very little damage to speak of, certainly nothing visually unappealing, or which causes a structural problem and the brass handles are original which is quite an unusual feature on an item of this age which would no doubt have received heavy usage throughout the years of its life.
Another particularly nice feature is the spanish design feet. The term spanish literally just refers to the design, which is very elegant with a little decoration, but nothing too overpowering. In our opinion these lovely original feet really raise this little dresser base above those which are similar but raised on just plain square feet.
As with all items which we offer for sale this dresser base has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our trained antique furniture restorers, where it has recieved a natural wax polish to ensure it is ready for immediate placement within the home environment.

As suggested by the name the original purpose of a potboard shelf was to store all manner of pots and pans. These pots and pans were often still wet, very heavy, or possibly still hot when placed back onto the storage shelf and this is the reason that we regularly find potboard shelves damaged beyond repair, or in rather ugly condition visually. No such problem with this particular piece however, it has a perfectly functioning and attractive potboard shelf which has an extremely rare panelled back to it, something we have only seen once or twice before. This dresser base is a good size, not overpoweringly large, whilst at the same time being perfect for a wide ranging variety of spaces around the home, due to its narrow proportions amongst other things.
