About the Item

Art Deco, amazing, Automaton bar and/or coffee table with secure storage. Very well made with solid, heavy quality solid timbers, with an intricately inlaid octagon top, all in Perfect condition with a soft age Patina. Made by “MESKER”, with the original label, fully intact to the inner base area. The Manufacturer, is believed to have originated in Germany 1879, moving to U.S.A., pre 1940, becoming Internationally famous for Architecture and Commercial designs. This phenomenal piece of furniture is intricately designed to convert from the open position to closed, with the slight touch of a finger activating the internal pivots to the eight sides. It opens simply by adding minor pressure at opposite sides of the top. The octagonal tabletop, is under glass, is intricately veneered, making identical 8 Triangle shaped veneers, with interlocking grain at all joints, creating a “sunburst” pattern, with each piece identical except for the slight natural variations of timber color. The interior has a central column that has fittings to take two lots of six stemmed glasses, and capacity of up to 6 Wine or Champagne bottles, etc. The mechanism has a fixed key to lock the position either open or closed, plus a secondary, removable key that “overlocks” the mechanism in the closed position, and seals the table, which could be used as a simple Valuables “vault”, and if the key holes are to the wall side, it looks just a fine coffee table. The obviously complicated and intricate mechanism, was probably too expensive for Commercial sales, Germany, circa 1940 Dimensions are approx.: 59cm high x 65cm across points or 60cm across flats, expanding to 74cm fully open.
