French Art Nouveau Cabinet in the Manner of Jules Leleu - Fall Front Bar

About the Item

French Art Deco burl amboyna fall front cabinet, in the manner of Jules Leleu. Perfect for a fall front desk or dry bar. Continuous diamond pattern front panels creates a three dimensional background. Top hinged panel opens to reveal mirrored back and work surface, four smaller drawers and one larger drawer separate the shelves creating cubby holes. Bottom portion of cabinet with two doors which open to reveal storage. Extraordinary Art Nouveau shapely gold leaf bronze handles. Jules Leleu (1883-1961), Art Deco furniture designer, born into French House of Leleu, a family of artists and furniture designers from the 18th century. An important author of New Modernism. Known for his use of simple geometric shapes used with exotic woods such as macassar ebony and burl amboyna. Another signature of his was mirrored glass elements and chrome, nickel and bronze elements such as the cord motif hardware used here. Also known for use of diamond shaped marquetry and cord motif gilded bronze. He work is often compared to Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann. During the early 1600's most paperwork was done on a portable writing table, a storage box with a hinged slanted surface used for writing. Literacy spread and became more valuable. Furniture makers designed a desk to make the master of the home a comfortable place to work and write letters, a flat writing surface with drawers for storage and a kneehole for a chair. In the mid 18th and 19th century the French Louis XV and XVI bureau plat, a flat top desk with three horizontal drawers in the apron, was adorned in the libraries of chateaus across France, they were a status of symbol for aristocracy. Smaller writing table were intended for the lady of the house.
