About the Item

Fine quality drinks cabinet with two doors which open to reveal a mirrored interior with shelf, the mirror is in original distressed condition.The mirrors are fixed in place with bronze studs. Each of the doors has two shelves held in place by metal supports.The left door front portrays a lady in period costume holding a fan, the right door portrays a gentleman in period dress serenading her with a mandolin. It is beautifully engraved.The cabinet is designed by Guglielmo Barbini.Born in Murano, Italy in 1898 he is one of the founding partners of the S.A.L.I.R. firm, one of the most important glass engraving companies in Venice. As an engraver he participated actively in the production of this glass factory. In the early 1940s he reproduced a number of antique items. He set up on his own after the War specializing in the making of engraved wall mirrors. S.A.L.I.R.(Studio Ars Labor Industrie Riunite) was founded in 1923 by Guglielmo Barbini, Giuseppe D'Alpaos and Gino Francesconi, decorators from the grinding shop of the Cristalleria Franchetti, and Decio Toso.Its activities centred mainly on engraving (diamond, wheel, sandblasting), intaglio, enamel decoration and gilding of blown glass, mirrors and decorative panels. From 1927 the firm worked with Guido Balsamo Stella and the Bohemian Franz Pelzel, the former for five years as artistic director, the latter until he retired from the businness (1968) , becaming a leader of figurative engraving. Using designs by Balsamo Stella, Pelzel wheel-engraved gracious Art Deco and classical-style figures and images of everyday life. The models engraved and enamelled in the Thirties were conceived by Pelzel himself, Vittorio Zecchin, Gio Ponti, Pietro Fornasetti and Atte Gasparetto. Subsequently Pelzel and his pupils created wheel-engraved or diamind-point glass with modern forms, designed by occasional collaborators such as Pietro pelzel, Ettore Sottsass, Serena Dal Maschio, Riccardo Licata, Ugo Blasi, Gi˜ Ponti, Romualdo Scarpa, Tono Zancanaro, Vinicio Vianello, and Agostino Venturini. The firm has been run since 1976 by Mario D'Alpaos and Luigi Toso, respectively the heirs of Giuseppe D'Alpaos and Decio Toso and current owners of the glassworks.

Good original condition but foxing in places consistent with age. The hand faceted mirrored squares fixed to the sides have been replaced.
