Please notice the streamlined shape of this handsome vintage French Art Deco cabinet circa 1935. All of the surfaces are horizontal, vertical or diagonal and the highly figured grain of the rosewood is placed along those same planes to accentuate the line. Two examples of the thought the cabinet maker gave to the design of this piece-notice how the plinth base is recessed under the body of the cabinet and the rosewood runs side to side to emphasize the horizontal line as well as the cabinet doors have the rosewood grain running vertically to visually reinforce the height of the cabinet doors. The top has a cascading edge that extends along the front and both sides that is only rounded are on the entire piece. Both the left and right corner have a flat vertical surface set at a forty five degree angle to the front and sides. While this effect is quite modern it reaches back to the furniture created during the reign of King Louis Philippe in France (1830-1848) that also had this type of corner. The three cabinet doors all retain their original keys and locks as well as the recessed almost hidden, hinges placed at the top and bottom corners. This choice places the emphasis on the overall shape of the cabinet as opposed to making the hardware part of the overall decoration. Both of the tall narrow doors on the left and right and the central door that encloses a large pane of glass open to allow full access to the three fully adjustable shelves on the interior. Each of these shelves is faced with rosewood to coordinate with the exterior. Notice also that the doors feature solid rosewood that is visible when the doors are open. This modern piece will make a striking impact whether used in an entry, dining room or living room and may be used for display and serving.
