The decorating possibilities with this antique French display cabinet, circa 1880 are boundless. The use of symmetry on this Louis XV style painted vaisselier is rather unique and frames the assortment of objects on display in a pleasing fashion. This open cabinet is entirely freestanding with the front legs in a lovely cabriole curved shape with the wide apron that connects the legs having a distinctive scalloped shape highlighted with a grooved detail following the outline of the scallop. All of the shelf fronts employ some variation on the shape of the apron to provide visual continuity across the entire piece. The use of the raised circular disks on three of the shelf fronts also provides a focal point and it is interesting to see how the different sizes of the disks interact to give this French painted vaisselier or dresser its optical power. The profile of this French open display cabinet is also delightful when viewed from the sides. The use of an in and out movement of the cabinet's edges offers confirmation of the excellent awareness of French design when creating a piece to be seen from all directions. Please notice that this antique painted dresser has shelves that are quite deep with each display surface also incorporating a plate groove along the back to facilitate the display of large chargers, plates or even photographs or artwork. The flat depth of the shelves enables the display of three dimensional objects, vases, pitchers or sculpture for example to provide even greater visual variety and interest.
