Open Corner Shelf on Feet, Solid Rosewood and Rosewood Veneer, 19th Century

About the Item

Superb open corner shelf scalloped in solid rosewood and rosewood veneer resting on feet. It consists of 5 shelves, all elegantly surrounded by a finely chiseled brass gallery. Period: 19th century - Second Empire Measures: H: 126 x W: 49cm Parisian work of good quality. The corner shelf is a small shelving unit whose triangle shape allows it to be positioned at the corner of a wall. It is often a kind of scale model of the large two-body corner, the lower part with doors and shelves above. It is a small piece of furniture-object is interesting and very decorative. The corner, born under the reign of Louis XV, really developed in the years 1730-1740. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the corners follow the great styles and are either painted or in precious wood and decorated with bronzes and marquetry, or in lacquer. In regional styles, they are generally made of fruit wood. It adapts perfectly to the new small apartments and breaks with the sumptuous and grandiose Louis XIV style. Its success will last during the reign of Louis XVI. In the 19th century, the corner also followed the great styles of the turn of the century. Utility furniture, it has also found its place in more bourgeois styles and will survive to this day. They are charming little furnishings. 1900 and 1925: the corner will disappear almost without anyone noticing. The "cozy corner", king of the decoration of the years 25-30, will sound like its death sentence, hopefully momentary.
