En 1950, Wirz fonde son propre studio de design, le Studio Walter Wirz, qui est rapidement devenu l'un des principaux bureaux de design suisses. Il était connu pour son approche minimaliste et fonctionnelle du design, influencée par le mouvement moderniste suisse. Au fil des ans, Wirz a remporté de nombreux prix pour son travail, dont le prix Jan Tschichold en 1988 et le prix suisse de design en 1991.
