About the Item

20th c., Federal style mahogany sideboard, possibly Baker, with original brass rail gallery, shaped front, inlaid stringing, and original brass drawer pulls, unmarked. While this may be considered a somewhat subdued version of a sideboard of this era, the inlay and brass accents add enough interest to make it a handsome piece. Regency sideboards were elegant, graceful, and highly functional furniture forms, not equaled before or since. Thoughtful and yet practical additions to the form of the sideboard arrived in the Regency period. For example, the addition of the rail gallery. From this rail would be hung a small baize or sometimes silk curtain which served as a splash guard to protect the wall behind it when dishes were being prepared for serving Dimensions: Approx. 46"h x 72"w x 23"d Condition: Good/Fair, some surface distress and staining, edge rubs and nicks. Shows well. Ready to place.
