About the Item

A work of incredible discipline and demanding attention to detail, this inordinately fine vitrine of the Bell Epoque is a statement piece in every way. Deep pure grain mahogany primary surfaces retain their brilliant ruby hues under a French polish, this almost glassy on the shelf, middle and top surfaces. The case is appropriately embellished with the finest mounts, each crisply cast and chiseled into a perfect representation of nature. The feet are particularly handsome, each a bold animal paw with sharp nails protruding from each rounded toe beneath furls of acanthus that rise along the leg. The cabinet is conveniently crafted such that the top easily lifts off of the lower base, each being self contained and of remarkably sturdy construction. The single drawer in the apron features the typical workmanship of this period, the tight and perfect dovetails cut from mahogany secondary woods and the bottom board set in grooves on either side with tacking along the back edge. It is hard to imagine a more perfect form, quality and size for a curio cabinet of this taste - this is a piece any collector of fine French furnishings would be positively proud to showcase in their home. A work of art in and of itself, it is intended for the protection and display of the finest things. Measurements: 17” D x 27 3/4” W x 52 5/8” H Condition Report: Retains one original key for the glass cabinet - lower drawer key not available. Tiny chips to edges of glass shelf. Light finish loss to the drawer and minor corner blemishes. Other light surface scuffing and abrasions. Overall the cabinet remains in nearly pristine condition with all original mounts and a gorgeous glassy surface, almost certainly original or at least quite early.
