About the Item

A grand and elegant oversized pale walnut veneered armoire in the 18th century Baroque style from the north of Germany, it is from the early 19th century. It has two enormous doors that open the whole front up, when shut the ends of the doors form the impression of the framing for the side panels. The lock is internal to the door with the keyhole being hidden behind a sliding cap in the centre molding. On the inside there are two shelves that are built in with the top one of those having two drawers underneath them, there is the facility to have a hanging rail at the top and if the shelves were removed then this hanging height would be 160cm. To the base of the armoire there is a hidden drawer in the skirt. At the base there are two enormous bulbous turned feet that retain their original ebonized finish. The armoire is peg jointed and once the pegs are removed it dismantles, this is very useful for transport and for moving it up and down stairs and through doorways, all joints when pegged are strong. Re-construction instructions can be provided if required. This armoire has two labels on the back of it that show that this armoire has been through Sotheby's auction house in its history along with transport companies label from Germany. There are a lot of repairs from over the years, mainly to veneers, this shows its history and gives it a certain charm that utilitarian items get. There are areas of loss but nothing substantial, the finish has been revived with a good wax polish. The lock and key work however it is not the original key but a later replacement. The top part of the cornice appears to have been replaced or altered at some point in its history but is in keeping with the style and age. Measures 210 cm high by 191.5 cm wide by 71.5 cm deep with carcass depth of 55 cm and internal depth of 46 cm. The bulbous feet alone measure 24 cm high by 20 cm diameter.
