  • Grand Renaissance Revival Armoire with Wire Screens, circa 1800
    Located in Chicago, IL
This grand antique cabinet is a 19th century French armoire crafted in the style of Renaissance Revival furniture. The large wardrobe has a clean-lined rectangular form surmounted by a molded and dentil cornice and raised upon short, straight legs. The cabinet is simply decorated with paneled sides and two front doors inset with decorative carvings and mesh screens. Each of the lower panels is beautifully carved in low relief with an ornate oil lamp emitting tendrils of smoke atop a spray of hanging grapes, fruiting branches, and other foliate scrollwork. Vertical fluting adds intrigue to the cabinet front and recalls the carved columns of Roman and Greek architecture. The interior is fitted with four shelves and lined with a neutral printed...

  • Antique French Renaissance Armoire Linen Press Library Bookcase China Cabinet
    Located in Dayton, OH
An exquisite French Renaissance Revival Bibliotheque, Linen press or display cabinet. Circa mid 19th cenutry. A large rectangular oak case centered by original 3/4 length glass between turned and fluted columns. Lower side of doors features an inset baroque cartouche with fruit basket and foliate motif within an arched deisgn. Upper molding is stylized with a dentil molding over acanthus frieze. Opens to four adjustable shelves. Case is supported by bun feet. With large full length doors, we often look at antique armoires as passageways to secret rooms or even different worlds. While most antique armoires don’t take us to a different dimension, they nonetheless add incredible charm and beauty to both new and old homes alike. Before closets were built into rooms, a solid wood free-standing wardrobe or “armoire” (French for Wardrobe) was standard for storing clothes. However, not all could afford such a luxury, and many antique wardrobes belonged to the upper classes who owned more than one set of clothes. Thus, on antique armoires from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, we often see artistic embellishments and luxurious details. Antique French armoires often have Rococo or Gothic carvings, mirrored doors and naturalistic carvings. These feminine elements on antique French armoires demonstrate a high level of craftsmanship and artistry afforded only by the rich. The phrase Knock-down referes to the ability for these pieces to be easily disassembled and re-assembled. This allowed for these massive...

  • French Renaissance Armoire
    Located in Saint-Ouen, FR
Original lock and key This piece of furniture shows no recess on its upper part. It opens with four folding-doors and two drawers within the belt. The key bears the date 1524 above cross motifs. Burgundy and Lyon regions subordinated themselves to architecture in a different manner than the other french schools. Rather than using particularly columns and pediments pieces of furniture from Lyon borrow architecture’s organization principles and rigorous designs. On the upper body a strong feeling of balance and symmetry appears with the folding doors reliefs. Swags of flowers and fruits held with knot cloth centered by a man seating on his arms. Here profiles, masks and chou de Bourgogne mingle with the structuring scrolls. The two lateral terms wear draperies and the goddess Diana in the center wears a belt of fruits similar to Hugue Sambin’s designs (Termes de Diane et de Venus, 1554, BNF). The two palm-leaves enriched drawers and the alternating scrolls belt balance the weight of the cornice with its alternatings consoles and tops. The lower body is also adorned by three terms with a feminine one in the center, all three are wearing fruits on their heads. The folding doors are centered upon a motif of cut cuirs by a mask in high relief. Wearing a feathered tiara...
