Armoire in West Indies Mahogany, Northern Europe, circa 1825
An exquisite armoire in West Indies mahogany with fine book-matching throughout accentuating the beautiful figuring of this choice wood's grain. On the chamfered corners are turned mahogany columns with fine line inlays of satinwood that flank two doors with crotch mahogany panels trimmed in a delicate carved molding and bordered by bookmatched mahogany veneers that fan out. The sides contribute to the unusual departure with bookmatched veneers placed front to back for an equally dramatic and handsome effect. The shaped crown molding and carved feet are original. The lighter color of the feet match the turned rings and inlays on the columns. The interior, which is also original to the armoire, features a top half-shelf, followed by four adjustable shelves, with one of these offering two storage drawers. Has working lock and key. Restored in our workshop with French-polish finish. Northern Europe, circa 1825. Measures: 58 1/2" wide (50" wide at waist) x 22 1/2" deep x 77 1/2" high (Interior depth: 17").
