Royal Worcester Pair of Porcelain Vases, Blush Ivory, Flowers, Edwardian, 1907
Located in London, GB
This is a very fine pair of small vases made by Royal Worcester in 1907. The vases have a "blush ivory" ground with beautiful overlaid enamel flowers. The original Worcester factory was founded in the mid 18th century and belongs to the group of famous pioneering potteries in Britain. It went through various changes and take overs, and in the mid 19th Century it merged with Chamberlains and Grainger, both earlier split-offs, taking the new name "Royal Worcester". The factory distinguished itself with its extremely high quality of artwork, hiring the best artists and always coming up with very vivid designs full of flowers, birds and fruits. It was in operation until the early 21st century but eventually succumbed to the changing times. These vases are in the "blush ivory" style, which became popular in the late 19th century and ceased around 1914. The blush ivory style was based on the Art Nouveau movement in Europe and Aesthetic Movement in Britain, creating designs based on natural shapes rather than the familiar ornamental shapes from the Victorian times. The production process was complex; items received a glossy glaze on the inside, and a matt glaze on the outside. Colours were achieved by spraying an apricot-coloured glaze near the rims with the newly invented "aerograph machine" - this was one of the first examples of air brushing! Decorations were often designed by master artists and then printed in outline and sometimes painted by hand; the colours to be applied by hand in raised or overlaid enamels like you can see on these vases. There was heavy gilding involved. All of this took 5 firings, a lot of time, materials and 22Kt gold, so you can imagine that these items were expensive. These small vases are very elegant and have exuberant bouquets of typically British wildflowers, such as clovers, buttercup and forget-me-nots. The vases have the green Royal Worcester...
