Bottom of the Barrel, Table in Salvaged Steel and Bronze
About the Item
Bottom of the Barrel is a collection conceived from discarded oil barrels harvested from the artist's surroundings. The barrels are processed into functional objects and finished by free pouring molten bronze organically along the surface. The free pouring process inspires spontaneity in the design process while simultaneously achieving unique textures and visual characteristics across the piece. The artist’s intention was to draw attention to waste and undervalued material resources as well as bring a renewed sense of value to discarded items.
Lauren Goodman is an artist whose work embraces responsive approaches to the local environment and the communities that steward and neglect it. Her minimalist, delicate design sensibility subtly draws attention to alternative material resources, whilst infusing poetry into the upcycling dialogue. Each of her pieces are developed cooperatively with research and education about local communities, land and labor history and Indigenous stewardship, while working exclusively with materials gleaned from her surroundings. Working with waste is the bedrock of Goodman’s design ethos espoused through practice and pedagogical activities rooted in alternative material sourcing. Goodman holds a Master of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design where she currently teaches in the Furniture Design Department.

Studio Lauren Goodman
Lauren Goodman is an artist whose work embraces responsive approaches to the local environment and the communities that steward and neglect it. Developing pieces from foraged materials and discarded objects, she seeks a less extractive approach to design. Goodman is committed to educating makers on the possibilities of a practice driven by waste reduction and strives to find balance between user, product and environment. Through working exclusively with materials gleaned from her surroundings she seeks non-exploitative design solutions that foreground local communities and reduce environmental harm.
Each piece by Lauren Goodman is uniquely one of a kind, made with salvaged material harvested from the artists surroundings. Custom commissions in this style are available upon request.
