Chinese Round Leg Square Table, circa 1850
About the Item
This well-proportioned center table dates to the mid-19th century, crafted of elmwood (yumu) with mortise-and-tenon joinery with thick, round legs and an expansive floating-panel top. Found at the center of social activity, Chinese square tables such as this were used on a daily basis for eating meals, serving tea, or playing games.
A flourish of curves adds graceful counterpoint to the angular silhouette, including scrolled spandrels and aprons inset with ruyi, auspicious symbols of immortality. The table is further accentuated with slim, noodle molding, a reference to ancient furniture designs wherein bent bamboo legs were held in place by thin strips of bamboo fibers. The tabletop has developed great character over the years, softened by an aged patina and marked by two pieced inlaid repairs, one shaped as a fan and the other as a ripe peach.
