Chinese Scholarly Lacquered Offering Table, c. 1850
About the Item
This mid-19th century console table was likely used as an offering table bearing incense. Appealing to the rarified taste of China’s literati, this Qing-dynasty table depicts auspicious objects found in a scholar’s studio. Atop the gorgeous red lacquer finish, the tabletop surface is painted with censors, brush pots, scrolls, and fantail vases holding bouquets of flowers. The motifs are all framed in a richly rendered meandering border. Made of northern elmwood, the table has a simply carved open apron, humpback stretchers, and subtle hoof legs. In twenty years, we have not come across another table painted quite like this one.
