Circa 1870 French Walnut Wood Center Table with Rams' Heads and Fleur De Lys
About the Item
This unusual and interesting center table was produced in France, during the middle of the latter half of the 19th century. It was during this time that French furniture makers, designers, carvers, and carpenters were able to freely re-imagine and re-interpret the various styles of the preceding centuries. We can see influences of the Louis XIV, Regence and LXV periods in the rams heads, cabriole legs, hoof feet, and mascarons.
The table was constructed with rich and beautiful walnut, and it has retained an exceptional patina for a 19th century piece. All 4 sides are shaped, carved, and decorated with a mix of moldings, rams’ heads, fleur de lys, and mascarons, while the shaped acanthus decorated legs terminate in hoof feet.
A layer of French wax has been applied, and after a careful polishing, the depth of the patina and beauty of the graining has come to life. Today, this interesting French table would make for a wonderful center table or writing table.

The white gesso/paint has been partially left throughout the table base and then glazed over to produce a beautiful and unique finish. This table can also be described as a Louis XIV “table à gibier...Category

- 17th Century French Semis De Fleur De Lys Cast Iron Fireback, Mitre and CrozierLocated in Dallas, TXFirst used about 450-500 years ago to reflect and disperse heat from a fire, firebacks were often cast with themes specific to the homeowner. Sometimes the iron would feature a familial coat of arms, or in the case of this 17th century semis de fleur de lys fireback, decorative motifs would represent the owner. The rectangular fireback has an arched top and a thick multi-layered molding along all edges. In the center is a raised heraldic shield with multiple fleur de lys charges, arranged in a pattern known as semis. A crinkled ribbon transverses the top edge, beneath a papal mitre and crozier topped with a volute leaf, indicating that the original owner was possibly a member of the church, possibly even a bishop. The iron has developed a fascinating chalky gray patina and can still be used functionally in a traditional fireplace...Category
