Georgian Mahogany Drum Top Library Table

About the Item

A very fine quality late George III period mahogany central standing drum top library table, having attractive old gilt tooled leather inset to circular rotating top, over frieze with four drawers alternating with four hinged compartments, raised on elegant gun barrel turned central stem with three splayed legs and original brass castors. Drum tables are quite often referred to as rent tables due to the belief that landlords used them in the drawing room, or study, as a desk for keeping accounts of, and collecting rent monies that were due. A part of this theory is that the rotating top allows the owner to remain seated in one place and simply spin the table top around to reach the specific drawer which they are looking to access. To this day they are still seen as one of the most desirable and sought after pieces of antique furniture due to their relative uniqueness and their incredible versatility when it comes to function which is evident by the fact they can be used in such a wide variety of different spaces around the home, from entrance halls to libraries, studies and living rooms. They generally add a real touch of elegance to any position they may find themselves in as well as the aforementioned functionality and the added bonus of being a talking point. This particular drum table is excellent quality and has real elegance to its clean, simple design. It retains an old, but not original leather top and overall the condition is very good. It also retains its original brass castors. As is relatively standard with this type of table it is easy to dismantle into two parts, making it very easy to ship and then upon arrival it can be easily moved around the property in two parts until its intended location is reached. circa 1800. • Rosewood 19th Century Writing Table
    Located in Bedfordshire, GB
An exceptional quality mid-19th century, William IV Period, rosewood writing table having blind tooled leather inset to crossbanded top, over two drawers with original turned wooden knobs opposed by two false drawers, to extremely elegant shallow frieze, raised on reverse tapered, faceted, end supports with elegant carved scrolling feet and original recessed brass castors. Dating to the William IV period, which of course has a most distinctive style of its own sitting, despite not lasting very long between the late regency and victorian periods of english furniture making, this writing table has a lot of stand out features. Firstly it is a great size. A little bigger than many, indeed big enough to use as a day to day desk for working at, whilst not being overpoweringly large like many earlier georgian writing tables which one may find. It is also of exceptional quality. Clearly constructed in a top workshop it is constructed using high end, decorative rosewood veneers on the outside and a lot of mahogany as secondary timbers on the inside which is a great sign of quality. The entire table oozes class and sophistication in fact from top to bottom. The original turned wooden knobs are a nice feature, as is the high support...
