High Quality François Linke Ormolu Mounted Amboyna Center Table

About the Item

Exquisite High Quality Gilt and Patinated Bronze-Mounted Louis XVI Style Amboyna Center Table after The Fontainbleau model. Signed F. Linke Maker: François Linke (1855-1946) Date: Circa early 20th century Origin: French Dimension: 31 in. x 38 1/2 in. The circular top set within a palmette-cast surround, on four supports headed by winged caryatids and terminating in paw feet. The original model for this table is attributed to Weisweiler and Thomire and was delivered by Rocheux to the Palace of Fontainebleau in 1810 (see J. P. Samoyault, Meubles entrés sous le Premier Empire, Paris, 2004, p. 248, no. 176). The design was subsequently copied at the turn of the century by cabinetmakers such as François Linke, who acquired the model at the vente Millet held on 7-9 June 1905 (lot 655). François Linke (1855 - 1946) The Belle Époque of French Furniture made a wide range of small tables which were perfectly suited for the new social conditions and limited space of the Paris bourgeoisie at the end of the nineteenth century.

The crossbanded oval top with central parquetry panel surrounded by floral and ribbon tie marquetry, above frieze with four drawers, bronze mounted tapering legs joined by a bronze mounted stretcher. Signed F. Linke to the top corner of one leg Back of lock stamped Ct. Linke and the number 402. Linke was born in Pankraz in Bohemia and was celebrated by the French as one of the greatest ébénistes of meubles de style at the turn of the century. He began his apprenticeship with a Bohemian master at the age of thirteen. Four years later, he toured Austria, settling and working in Vienna for two years. Linke arrived in Paris in 1875, and by 1881 he had established his own small workshop at 170 rue du Faubourg St. Antoine. Taking 18th century styles as his starting point and adapting earlier styles to contemporary taste, Linke produced fine quality furniture, steadily expanding his business during the next 20 years. He firmly established his reputation after receiving a gold medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900 for his extraordinary Grand Bureau.
