About the Item

REGENCY MAHOGANY AND TOOLED-LEATHER DRUM OR RENT TABLE England, ca. 2nd quarter of 19th century over animal paw feet, retaining original lion mask pulls Item # 306SEG14A A bold and powerful circular rent table from the Regency period, it features a light brown leather top with a gilt-tooled edge surrounded by a veneered edge over an apron comprised of a mixture of four withdrawable drawers and four triangular hinged swinging drawers in a clever arrangement. Each drawer is beautifully hand-dovetailed with oak secondary woods and retains the original well-detailed sand-cast brass handles depicting a snarling lion with a ring grasped in its jaws. The table-top is raised over a tapered octagonal baluster over multiple ring-turnings at the triangular base with a loosely trapezoidal stringer-inlay decoration raised over carved animal paws. It remains in estate condition with surface history, wear, discoloration and an overall sense of the life it has lived - it is a very powerful and beautifully patinated example in its present state, but it would be truly stunning if it were fully restored and the surface conserved. Measurements: 29 7/8" H x 48 3/4" diameter Condition Report: Old leather top with light wear, scratches, discolorations and fading to the gilding; veneers throughout with cracks and losses, some noteworthy and obvious (particularly around the uprights between drawers where they have had a tendency to break out through the bottom of the frame over the years); old crack in the triangular leg; various patches, color-matching attempts and losses; there is color variation and some bleaching to the surface of the mahogany throughout; overall the table presents nicely as an "aged" antique and as such it is being offered in estate condition, but it would be an excellent candidate for a more full restoration.
