Ellipse Coffee Table

About the Item

Isabelle Stanislas’ life is a path paved with geometry, similar to the scalene triangle with its three different sides. This geometrical mix is omnipresent in everything she does and is: in her shared Moroccan, French and Israeli roots; in her work that combines interior decoration, architecture and furniture design; and in her inspiration composed of a permanent balance between a respect for history, the audacity of modernity, and her desire to reunite all of these in the fundamentally essential. In Isabelle’s own words: “To invent is not to question everything. It means using the existing light and space and projecting them into the present. Heritage is not condemned to a life behind a window of the past. If we respect heritage, if we understand its codes and values, then we can marry it with modernity without denaturing it. After all, the past, the present and the future have always been the three sides of the same scalene”. After graduating from l’Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris with a diploma in architecture, Isabelle Stanislas was rapidly noticed for her work on various collective artistic projects, displaying an open attitude to diverse forms of creative expression. In 2003, her work for the Zadig & Voltaire boutiques demonstrated her now trademark artistic approach, founded on the rationalization of space, the incorporation of authentic historical codes and a deliberately restrained use of neutral colors. This is a philosophy that she has continued to develop, notably through her architecture agency which she founded in 2006. Influenced by the work of Tadao Ando, Renzo Piano and Louis Khan, Isabelle Stanislas has developed her “artistic philosophy of structure” over a long series of prestigious projects. Through her play on scale and the connection of volumes to create monolithic units, Isabelle Stanislas looks to pacify the area she is working on, whilst always respecting its unique identity. Her interiors are marked by a minimalist decoration and a color scheme that favors the use of one main tone, alongside black and white. This pursuit of clear lines also transpires in Isabelle’s furniture design, a logical progression from her architectural endeavors. The ‘Ellipse’ collection designed for Galerie BSL is more about the ellipse in the figurative sense vs its expected oval shape and curve. Indeed, the ellipse is the foundation of Isabelle Stanislas’ “artistic philosophy of structure”, in other words her desire to create a design that aims at a form of quintessence. The collection is based on the masterful conjugation of three materials: white Estremoz marble, black Marquina marble, and bronze-colored patinated brass. Each marble is imagined both individually and in association with the striking choice of a striped motif. A quasi kinetic visual game materializes in extremely powerful yet contained graphic compositions created by the combination of the black and white lines of the marble and the patinated brass elements. The ‘Ellipse’ collection affirms itself with power and personality through simple geometric shapes and a minimalist palette of colors and materials, never striving for the spectacular but remaining faithful to the balance of compositions and volume. The collection speaks for Isabelle Stanislas’ talent and her capacity to invent her own language, both concise and striking, in which an asserted yet peaceful radicality forms a perfect equilibrium. In 2019 Isabelle Stanislas joined the exclusive group of 100 international Interior Designers chosen by AD USA as well as by ELLE Decor USA. As a leading figure in contemporary architecture, she is featured in the book published at Rizzoli’s by Marie Kalt & AD France entitled ‘The New Chic: French Style from today’s leading interior designers’. In Autumn 2018 Isabelle was chosen by a jury of professionals, Le Mobilier National (French national authority regarding state furniture since the 17th century) as well as President Macron and his wife Brigitte to renovate the formal reception rooms of the French Presidential Palace (Palais de l’Elyse´e). Isabelle’s aim through this major project was first and foremost to promote the historic notion of French Elegance. True to her sober approach she chose to replace the red and golden colors of the Second Empire, which had remained unchanged since 1889, by six nuances of grey that visually unite the adjacent “Salle des Fe^tes”, the “Jardin d’hiver” and the “Salon Napoleon”. The reception and official dining rooms of the Elyse´e spanning over 1,000 square meters have been resolutely brought into the 21st century. Far from fashion and trends, Isabelle Stanislas remains true to the fundamental architectural principles of volume, perspective and the optimization of light. For each project, a perfect balance between the space’s history and identity and Isabelle’s own singular style is achieved.
