Traces of time and use. The table is in good condition. France, circa 1970s On March 1, 1815 Napoleon landed at Vallauris, in the Gulf of Juan, on his return from the island of Elba with 900 grenadiers. After setting foot in Golfe-Juan, Napoleon will once again become the head of the country on March 20, the date of his return to the Tuileries. It was especially at the end of the 19th century that major town planning work was carried out. It is the transition of the way of life from the Middle Ages to modern times: in 1861, the new mayor Thomas Adolphe Aynaud appointed by the emperor to replace Jérôme Gazan, who was unable to do so, had the town hall built28. Work continued with the installation of the tramway in 1899, the construction of the boys' school the same year, and the girls' school in 1908. Electricity arrived in 1919. The arrival of water from the Siagne canal, around 1900, allowed the development of agriculture, and in particular the cultivation of the flowering orange tree, the bitter orange tree. Today Vallauris is the only town in France where this tree is still cultivated to harvest its flower and distill it. Industrial culinary pottery has always been, over the centuries, along with working the land, the main activity of the city. But, at the beginning of the 20th century, it became artistic pottery and ceramics, with the Massier family. The international biennial continues to make the city “the” French city of ceramics. The expansion of the hamlet of Golfe-Juan is linked to the appearance of tourism, and especially to the arrival of the railway, in the second half of the 19th century. Illustrious personalities have villas built on the hillside. After the Second World War, Vallauris experienced a very prosperous period when, attracted by the reputation of the city, renowned artists came to settle there, including Pablo Picasso, Roger Capron, André Baud, Robert Picault, Gilbert Valentin. Picasso donated the Man with the Sheep to the city in 1950, and, in 1955, the fresco War and Peace installed in a room of the castle which became a national museum.
