Josep Lluis Sert Tables

About

Pair of original tables designed by Catalan architect Josep Lluis Sert for his Center for the Study of World Religions building at Harvard Divinity School, 1959. J. L. Sert was a Spanish architect and city planner born in Barcelona, Spain to a wealthy and well-connected noble Catalan family. Early in his career he worked with Corbusier in Paris and where he designed the Spanish Republic's pavilion at the World's Fair, the Paris Exposition of 1937 which showcased art of his close friends Calder, Miro and Picasso's Guernica. When Franco took power in Spain in 1939 Sert went into exile in New York where he carried out several city planning projects in South America. From 1953 to 1969 Sert was Dean of Harvard Graduate School of Design where he initiated the first degree program in urban design. The firm he established in Cambridge, MA designed many well-known projects including the Maeght Foundation (1959-1964) in Southern France, the Fundació Miró (museum) in Barcelona (1975) and quite a few buildings for Harvard University, including Holyoke Center (1958-1965), the Harvard Science Center (1969-1972), Peabody Terrace (apartments, 1962-1964), and the Center for the Study of World Religions (1959-1960) at the Harvard Divinity School, where these tables are from, and his own home, the modernist masterpiece, Casa Sert, a Mediterranean style courtyard home directly across the street from CSWR. Image number 15 shows a variation of these tables as seating with upholstered cushions. (That actual bench currently resides in Barcelona with his nephew, the food historian, Count Francisco de Sert.) Images 16-18 show similar furniture in his house in Locust Valley, Long Island, New York. Sert's architecture, though not loved by all, is as indelibly woven into the fabric of Boston as that of Bullfinch or Richardson. These tables and most all of the original Sert designed furniture for the CSWR were deaccessioned by Harvard in the late 1980s-early 1990s in connection with building renovations. "Sert es el arquitecto que nos ha enseñado a vivir sin muebles. Su arquitectura desarrolla y controla todo lo necesario [...] de modo que sólo queda espacio para las personas y el arte." (Jaume Freixa) "Sert is the architect who has taught us to live without furniture, Its architecture develops and controls everything necessary [...] so that there is only room for people and art." (Jaume Freixa).
