About the Item

Move over Mid-Century Modern, the Memphis movement is back, and making a bold impression on both the interiors and fashion worlds alike. In 1981 Italian designer Ettore Sottsass formed a collaborative of designers to push the boundaries of modern design. The name Memphis Group originated from Bob Dylan's Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again which was played on repeat while the meeting was in process. The Memphis Group took their inspiration from Art Deco and Pop Art as well as 1950's Kitsch, employing the use of geometric shapes and vivid color choices. This custom-made piece was designed by one of the original members of the Memphis Group, native Los Angelean, Peter Shire. This expertly executed cocktail table features the well-recognized traits applied to pieces designed by the celebrated design collaborative. The painted metal base is comprised of two vertical purple abstract shapes that are flanked top and bottom with additional defined shapes in an array of eye-catching colors. The purple vertical pieces are supported by black metal stretchers which overlap one another, creating an visually interesting composition. This base is topped with a broad rectangular piece of smoked glass. This extraordinary piece would be a fantastic conversation starter and an arresting addition to any space. This commanding coffee table would be a great addition as part of a Classic, contemporary or Mid-Century Modern living room, den, man (or woman!) cave, family room, office or bedroom. It would also be an Apt choice in a corporate, retail or hospitality location such as a boutique hotel lobby, cocktail bar, members club, workspace studio, executive office or in a luxe clothing emporium. Measurements: 19" H x 83.75" W x 24" Glass thickness 0.5" Excellent vintage condition. Signs of use commensurate with age are evident. Small missing flakes to the edges of the painted base, minor scratches to the glass.
