About the Item

T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings Biomorphic Cocktail Table with a Fascinating Noguchi Connection Designed by T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings for Widdicomb, this stunning biomorphic cocktail table is a masterpiece of mid-century modern design. The sculptural base is crafted from solid carved maple, supporting an elegantly curved glass top—a form that speaks to both artistry and functionality. A unique anecdote ties this table to the legendary Isamu Noguchi. Following his groundbreaking 1939 coffee table for MOMA President Conger Goodyear, Noguchi had an unexpected meeting with Gibbings in Hawaii. There, he shared a mockup of a new design, but never heard back. Years later, while voluntarily interned in Arizona during WWII, Noguchi discovered a published version of his concept—credited not to him, but to Gibbings. This pivotal moment inspired Noguchi to refine his work, eventually leading to the creation of the IN-50 coffee table for Herman Miller, an iconic piece that reshaped design history. Expertly restored and in excellent condition, this table remains a striking example of organic modernism—a piece that carries both aesthetic beauty and a compelling story. Dimensions: Width: 47 in Depth: 32.75 in Height: 17 in An extraordinary addition to any collection, this piece is more than furniture—it’s a conversation starter and a testament to design evolution. A silver dollar sized warble in the glass can be perceived from certain angles, which is an infrequent, but natural occurrence in the material.
