Roger Capron - Round Ceramic end Table from the Herbier's Series on Wood Legs

About the Item

Round end or coffee table with the famous Roger Capron Herbier tiles, designed from 1968 to 1982. The tiles are nicely underlined with a white grout. The handcrafted Herbier tiles were a subset of the Garrigue tiles produced by a technique in which real leaves were pressed into the clay and, during firing, disintegrated, leaving a finely detailed imprint. The leaves come from "La Garrigue", a variety of vegetation indigenous to southeastern France only, where Roger Capron lived and worked for 60 years. These Garrigue and herbier tiles inspired a large series of side to dining tables, including wall covering. Many kitchen in the French Riviera have their walls covered with Garrigue tiles. Herbier refers to the smaller leaves and are either outlined by an earthtone enamel or sometimes entirely covered by the earthtone enamel. Exceptionally, herbier tiles were outlined in white enameled as it is the case here. Garrigue refers to larger leaves and are rarely outlined and never covered with solid enamel all over. This table is mounted in a wood (oak) frame and 4 cylindric wood legs, typical design that Mr. Capron was using for his production in the 1970's. Wood frame and legs have been refinished by a professional woodworker who managed to keep the beautiful patina that this table got over the years.
