Adopting the Bauhaus trend of abandoning ornamentation to benefit the form, Scandinavian craftsmen maintained the beauty and warmth inherent to traditional cabinetmaking. Above all, Scandinavian designers believed that design could certainly be used to improve people's lives. This intriguing coffee table is a great example of this belief. The rectangle shape with all its compartments is in service of functionality, which is a defining characteristic of mid-century furniture of the region. The simple lines are paired with a simple material, pinewood. The warm, rustic look of the wood gives this table a charm that is only enhanced by the patina.
