Teak & Ceramic Coffee Table by Roger Capron, France, c. 1960

About the Item

Coffee table made up of a glazed ceramic tiles top opposite a teak part, structure and feet in black lacquered steel. The handcrafted tiles are glazed using the paraffin reserve technique which brings particular relief to the design made with satin glazes. Note that the feet are removable, which signs both an ingenious design and allows easy transport. The condition is excellent with the exception of a small crack on the ceramic, on the edge of the table. Like many old models, this table is not signed. Both structure and feet may show some light wear. Additional pictures can be provided on simple request. About the Artist Roger Capron (1922-2006) is one of the most proeminent ceramicists of french post war period. Graduated and then teacher at the School of Applied Arts in Paris, he moved to Vallauris in 1946 to produce mainly decorative pieces. He is a major actor in the rebirth of this village of potters marked by the presence of Picasso. From 1963, Roger Capron devoted exclusively his production towards art tiles and decorative panels. Two of his most famous achievements are the Harbour station in Cannes in 1957 and the entire decoration of the Byblos Hotel in St Tropez in 1968. Awarded at the triennial of Milan in 1954 and at the Universal Exhibition in Brussels in 1958, his artistic and architectural expression has been the subject of numerous exhibitions throughout the world with a great retrospective in 2003 at the French National Museum of Ceramic.
