About the Item

Inspired by ancient monolithic structures and classical architecture, here we have a gorgeous example in the style of Mario Bellini's classic 'colonnato' series in solid hand-shaped and polished Italian figured travertine stone. Along with its archaic design language, this table's construction also borrows from famous post and lintel monolithic structures such as Stonehenge, utilizing statics and the weight and shape of each piece to create stability without joinery. The subtly tapered legs connote the Greek Doric order of columns, a treatment which carried over into the Roman Tuscan order, and then eventually into the cannon of Renaissance and later neo-classical architecture overall. This design, like much of Bellini's best work, can be understood as a meditation on the physicality, materiality, and formal qualities of objects across the history of design. Like all the best modernists, Bellini always kept one foot in the past, and thusly achieves a synthesis that can only be described as timeless--he seeks to be evolutionary, not revolutionary--or novel for novelty's sake. No trendy ornamentation, no flashy technical prowess on display, just volume, space, mass, and material. The travertine is of the highest quality, sourced from Italy, and includes stunning figured sections of various mineral inclusions-- morphing as it tells the story of the spans of time that created it. Like a tree's rings, layers of the mineral deposits that will eventually become travertine stone communicate to us about the physical conditions of the location at the time of bonding. This amalgam becomes more than simple stone, and can be understood as a living record of the time and place that spawned it, a fossil of process of formation. This piece remains in completely original very good vintage condition. Available for viewing at our NYC studio.
