About the Item
An elegant and architecturally significant console table attributed to renowned Italian architect and designer Carlo Enrico Rava. Crafted in the early 1940s, the piece is constructed from richly carved and polished mahogany and topped with a beautifully figured onyx slab. The onyx features a distinctive knife-edge detail that lends a crisp, modern silhouette to the form.
Designed with architectural sensitivity, the console is proportioned to sit flush against a wall, even with standard base molding — as noted, the example in photos is not pressed against the wall to demonstrate this feature.
Rava was a leading figure in Italian Rationalism and a founding member of Gruppo 7, the collective of architects who spearheaded a modernist reform in Italian design. He was also a founding member of the Congrès Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne (CIAM), an influential organization dedicated to promoting the principles of the Modern Movement across architecture and design. His fellow founding members included many luminaries of early 20th-century design, such as Pierre Jeanneret, Hannes Meyer, Josef Frank, and Gerrit Rietveld.
This console was featured in Elle Decor, March 2017, in an article highlighting Rava’s legacy.
A rare and collectible piece, this console bridges rationalist rigor with refined materials and craftsmanship — a perfect example of early Italian modernist design.
