About the Item

Maison Jansen Painted and Parcel-Gilt Console Table with chamfered corners. This console was created by Maison Jansen who sold an identical pair to the Duke and Duchess of Windsor for their house on the Boulevard Suchet in Paris where they lived before the war. The unmistakable edges of the consoles appear in a watercolour by famed Russian artist Serebryakov of the entrance to the Banquette Room. The consoles reappear in the dining room of their Paris house on route du Champs d'Entrainement after the war. This console was found fortuitously in the South of France, and may have been made for the Villa La Cröe, which was also home to the Windsors after the abdication. It is a rare and exceptionnal piece, and has been lovingly restored to its original splendour. Though it was in a sound state, it needed refinishing, so that the gold leaf was redone, as well as the trompe l'oeil pattern painted over the marble top. The top is actually in white marble, which is overlaid with a trompe l'oeil painted chequered pattern of Marbre du Languedoc and Marbre Griotte. Created in the whimsical Rocaille style, the base is delightfully adorned with palms and pineapples.
