About the Item
An extraordinary pair of Italian Baroque console tables, dating from the 17th century, remarkable for their high sculptural quality and lavish decorative theatrical design.
Each console features an exuberant carved base in giltwood with silvered mecca finish, richly adorned with volutes, grotesque masks, acanthus scrolls, and allegorical figures. The carving is deeply modeled, almost three-dimensional, giving the consoles the presence of true sculptures rather than mere pieces of furniture.
Each console is conceived almost as a free-standing sculpture, the vigorous high relief sculptural carvings produce striking chiaroscuro effects and convey the grandeur typical of the Italian Baroque aesthetic. The whole piece exudes movement, elegance, and opulence.
The tops are crafted from solid marble, featuring a refined palette of black with grey and white veining, and are cut with an elegant, shaped profile. This rare use of full stone slabs — rather than veneered surfaces — enhances the consoles’ prestige and emphasizes their lasting durability.
The silvered mecca gilding, preserved with an authentic patina, enhances the play of light across the depth of the carvings, and reflecting light with a refined brilliance.
With their theatrical design, sculptural presence. and strong architectural character, these consoles are masterpieces of 17th-century Italian craftsmanship. They can serve as important statement pieces in a luxury interior, a palatial hallway, or a refined living space, embodying the grandeur of Baroque decorative arts. They embody the drama and magnificence of 17th-century Italian craftsmanship.
