19th Century French Henri II Neoclassical Writing Table

About the Item

19th Century French Henri II Neoclassical Writing Table makes a great choice for a home office, a student desk, or just a handy table to have in any room that supplies a convenient, full width drawer. Hand-crafted from solid old-growth oak, its solid plank top was designed for centuries of daily use. The single full width drawer features a diamond raised panel, and reveals hand-dovetailing when open. Each corner boasts perpendicular corbels carved with shell motif, which appears over the double turned column supports on each corner. A pendant finial on a carved corbel is just visible at the center of each side. The columns converge on the "H" structure below which also features a colonnade of turned columns across the width, with eight bun feet finishing the look below. Finished on all four sides, it's a great choice for placement anywhere in the room, even at the center for all to appreciate! Circa 1870s Measures 30H x 42W x 25.5D; knee clearance 25H

19th century French Henri II neoclassical walnut confiturier, cabinet is a stellar example of the petite buffet with one door affectionately called the confiturier because of its original design being intended to store confit jars in the kitchen. At some point it became obvious that a very useful miniature buffet like this would be ideal for other rooms, and the genre blossomed. This example, rendered from sumptuous French walnut, features neoclassical architecture including turned columns carved with fletching on the face fitted with Doric capitals on each cornerpost, flanking the stylized pyramidal heraldic crest on display in full relief at the center of the cabinet door. Fletching also appears on the drawer facade above, with the entire affair graced with fine molded detail. Ideal as a bathroom vanity cabinet...

Created entirely from old growth oak, it was literally designed to last for centuries. A single steel pendant pull for the drawer is the only other material used. Hand-carved bas relief covers the entire half-bullnose bevel around the perimeter, underneath a subtle ogee bevel surrounding the solid plank top. Another tier of ogee trim in reverse appears under the carved edging, and that's just the surface! The apron is a marvel of wood sculpting, with elaborate scrollwork and stylized naturalistic foliates in glorious full relief appearing on all four facades, framed by amazingly lifelike full relief busts...
