19th Century French Renaissance Wall Desk with Extending Writing Surface

About the Item

19th century French Renaissance Wall Desk with Extending Writing Surface represents the height of the revival of the style that occurred during the reign of Napoleon III who we can thank for reviving virtually all the French styles dating back to the mid 12th century in a glorious period of rebirth that showcased the extraordinary talents of French cabinetmakers and sculptors for all the world to appreciate! Rendered from dense, old-growth indigenous oak which is harder than walnut, it starts with a crest motif on the crown comprised of foliate scrdolls with floral accent, set upon a pediment backsplash that extends out and wraps around the uppermost surface creating a wonderful display space for memorabilia and family photos and the like. A gadrooned edge provides the transition down to the upper drawer tier, a wonderful contrivance that is recessed back from the work surface, fitted with five drawers and a cubby hole, and carved with foliates and lions' heads on each corner. Turned wood knobs provide easy access to the drawers. Those same drawers in turn overlook the main writing surface trimmed in a larger scale version of the same gadrooned edge, but with an added bonus ~ the top slides out to increase the main work surface to a very accommodating size perfect for today's electronic office requirements. Below the main writing surface, drawers again appear, but this time on a slightly larger scale, also flanked by lions' heads, and also fitted with turned knobs. The right drawer opens to reveal a removable segmented tray. Additional knee clearance is afforded by the design at the center. Support is provided by clockwise & counter-clockwise barley twist columns and stretchers, each rendered from single posts of solid oak to provide a stable and long-lasting desk your family will appreciate for generations! circa 1850s Measures 46.5H x 51W x 25.5D. Writing surface extends to 24" interior depth. Knee clearance when extended is 28H!

Created entirely from old growth oak, it was literally designed to last for centuries. A single steel pendant pull for the drawer is the only other material used. Hand-carved bas relief covers the entire half-bullnose bevel around the perimeter, underneath a subtle ogee bevel surrounding the solid plank top. Another tier of ogee trim in reverse appears under the carved edging, and that's just the surface! The apron is a marvel of wood sculpting, with elaborate scrollwork and stylized naturalistic foliates in glorious full relief appearing on all four facades, framed by amazingly lifelike full relief busts...
