About the Item

ART DECO PERIOD KARELIAN BIRCH PART-EBONIZED PEDESTAL DESK Circa 1930 also suitable as a small format dining table with a fitted glass top Item # 312IZW08P The overall air of this wonderful Art Deco period writing table is borrowed almost entirely from the Biedermeier period of a century prior. The robust curvatures, emphasis on showcasing the natural chaotic grain movement of the timbers devoid of any embellishment and the use of ebonized contrasts are almost entirely lifted from that wonderfully creative period of creation. That inspiration was translated into a form useful for interiors during the 1930s Art Deco era, the result being a brilliant two-pedestal writing table that is as useful and perfect in today's modern interior as it was in the 1930s. The dramatic veneers are protected on the top with a fitted glass top, allowing the table to be actively and functionally used without concern in the office without concern. It is raised over veneered pedestals on stepped ebonized footers. Notably, the table is at least as perfect as a small dining table for petite spaces where only four chairs are needed. It is incredibly stylish in this setting, despite almost certainly being designed as a writing table and not for use as a dining table. Measurements: 72" W x 35 7/8" D x 29 1/4" H Condition Report: Overall the desk exhibits more of a historical surface versus a pristine finish, heavily patinated and showing gentle use throughout. It is also a more chaotic veneer and as a result shows cracking/lifting/loss. It presents beautifully and is incredibly sturdy and strong. Detailed condition notes: Scuffing and wear to the ebonized parts including some veneer losses (several inner corners in particular); small areas of veneer loss throughout (most frequently to edges and corners) including cracking of veneers and other blemishes; scuffs and wear to the surface throughout, though these have mostly joined the finish and create an overall aged historical surface; slight separation of the inner corner of one pedestal with associated veneer losses; the glass top is not tempered and has light scuffs from use over the years - the inverted corners of the glass "almost" perfectly match up to the table's inverted corners, though deviating slightly from the lines; incredibly sturdy and strong.
