Art Deco Desk by Maurice Adams

About the Item

A fine Art Deco desk by Maurice Adams, in highly polished walnut. Bow fronted, with four drawers to each side, a central door and a good size cupboard beneath. Quality, silvered handles and escrucheons and raised on eight elegant legs. Both the central drawer and cupboard below with the original working locks and keys. Makers label to the back. This desk/writing table formed part of the Grosvenor range by Maurice Adams and was made for the upper class and aristocracy. All our furniture is professionally polished and restored where necessary. Our restorer has over 40 years of furniture restoration experience including 15 years living at Windsor Castle whilst restoring furniture for the Royal household, so comes highly recommended. This desk/writing table comes in showroom condition. Maurice Adams saw himself as the natural successor to the great furniture makers of the eighteenth century and had ambitious plans for 20th-century British interior design. All Adams's furniture was made by hand in Gloucester and displayed in Adams's showroom in Portman Square, London. The desk features on page 94 of ‘Modern Decorative Art’ by Maurice Adams, first published in 1930. The Grosvenor range was distinguished by its highly finished veneers. This emphasis on glossy veneers is characteristic of much of Adams's work. The designer praised the marble-like effect of veneers and their ability to exploit the 'natural beauty' of figured woods. The curvaceous shape of this desk show the veneers to maximum effect. The V&A have a cabinet from the Maurice Adam’s Grosvenor range in their collection.
