About the Item
The 'Nodum Desk' by British designer-maker, Tom Vaughan, is part of a series of work tracing three-dimensional paths of movement through a solid, functional form, in which the artist pushes both material and process to its limit. Made in natural or ebonized ash, each one is carved from solid wood and handmade to the bespoke dimensions specified by the client, while being limited to ten within the edition. People are mesmerised by the way Vaughan manipulates timber and metals into these sculptural organic forms.
Tom Vaughan, founder of Object Studio, and his team of specialist craftspeople take on ambitious commissions for galleries, public institutions and private clients, including the fabrication of complex three-dimensional structures in woods, metals and synthetics. An artist-maker who trained in Cabinet Making at London Guildhall University and in Three-dimensional Design at Brighton University, Vaughan took a Masters in Contemporary Product Design at the Royal College of Art under the tutelage of Ron Arad (he himself is now a visiting lecturer at the RCA). He founded Object Studio in London as a workshop for making, a laboratory for experimentation, and the meeting point of traditional craft with modern processes, describing his process as "making three-dimensional brush strokes."
