A handsome French Art Deco palisander wood desk writing table circa 1935 with distinctive curved legs. Each of the four corners have a bold rounded profile designed to complement the six legs as well as the feet that elevate the entire table. The balance and symmetry of this vintage French desk is a hallmark of the Art Deco style that swept through the world in the 1920s and 1930s. The exotic palisander timber is a variety of rosewood imported from the tropics and was always a desirable material to use for special pieces of furniture. The unique grain and color of palisander added to the overall appearance of Art Deco furnishings and was best seen when applied in the sort of broad and flat planes seen here. There is a drawer concealed in the apron which is opened and closed by pulling on the underside which increases the utility of the desk in a measurable way. Please notice the subtle manner in which the palisander has been applied to this table. The top shows the grain moving from side by side in a horizontal flow. But the lower edge of the top extends slightly beyond the expanse of the actual writing surface and is defined by the vertical line of the wood grain. At each of the four corners the grain is placed to flow horizontally in opposition to the vertical line of the grain seen across all four sides of the lower section of the top. This same placement of the grain in a well thought out plan to draw power from the palisander is seen on the lower sections of the table desk as well. Three legs support the table at each end and stand upon an oval platform. As each leg has a curve at either end there is a sense of motion and movement even though the legs are stable. The oval platform is elevated by four shaped feet, two at each end, whose bold profile complements the curves used elsewhere. Always designed to be seen from every direction with equal allure this Art Deco table desk is able to float within an interior or be used against a wall.
