Pierre Migeon II
Pierre Migeon II (1701-1758) belonged to one of the most important Parisian families of cabinetmakers. He worked as a marchand-ébéniste (merchant-cabinetmaker) which meant that he not only built his own furniture but also acted as a dealer for other artisans such as Boudin, R.V.L.C., and Criaerd. His designs were never excessively Rococo; however, he favored serpentine shapes. His specialties included secrétaires, commodes, writing tables, and small pieces. Madame de Pompadeur was an important client. Migeon also furnished pieces to the court through the Garde-Meuble Royal.
Migeon’s pieces can be seen at the Musées des Arts Décoratifs, du Louvre, Petit Palais, and de Carnavalet in Paris, at the Châteaux de Fontainebleau and Champs-sur-Marne as well as the Musées des Arts Décoratifs in Lyon and Beauvais. His work is also among collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum and The Wallace Collection in London and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

During the turbulent French Revolution and following Napoleon rule, Louis Philippe (1773-1850) remained in exile for 21 years until the Bourbon Restoration, when he became the King of the French from 1830 to 1848. For the first time, the developing upper class–not the monarchy–influenced the progression of this style’s characteristics. However, King Louis Philippe’s personality still inspired many aspects. His casual nature reflected this style’s informal, comfortable build. Much of the style was taken from the personality of the King himself. Unlike his Bourbon predecessors, he wore business dress...Category
