George Eliot's Writing Table

About the Item

This table was made in the mid-Victorian period — possibly about 1860. It measures 18 inches diameter across the top and the gallery tray has a slightly wider dimension of 24 inches. The table is 31 inches high and 14 inches to the middle platform. It is well fitted with a turned centre column and has a revolving spindled centre tray. The round top, with a burr-walnut grain, has an inset thumb moulding and a revolving candle sconce. It is in sound and stable condition, of good colour and polish and is raised on a tripod base with convex shaped legs. These companion tables were used throughout the Victorian period. They were usually used in the family drawing room next to more comfortable chairs. The design possibly developed from the early sewing tables, which were used for embroidery and the music stand that might also have held candles. They were called companion tables, as they would usually be used in close proximity to the user. The user would need to be within about two feet of the light from the candle and this close proximity would offer easy access to the different sections of the revolving tray. A writer like George Eliot might have used one section for her reference books, another for inkpots, pens and a blotter and the other could have held notes or possibly a small tray for refreshment. George Eliot would sometimes work for several hours before going for a walk in the garden to unwind. One report describes her holding “her writing on her knees, throwing herself backwards into her chair with a high support for her feet, to take advantage of her long sightedness.” At times she suffered pain and her posture was not good. Her doctor, Dr Liebreich, gave her proper glasses and suggested a sort of semi-couch to enable her to write more comfortably. Included here is an artist’s drawing for the design of the Priory where George Eloit lived. One can see a spindle back couch. A companion table with spindle supports would seem to fit in well with this design. Behind the couch, there is just the suggestion of a tripod base table with convex shaped legs, (which does appear to have a platform at about 14 inches high.)

  • Writing Desk used by Charles Dickens, circa 1800
    Located in Dorking, GB
This is the desk on which Dickens began his famous writing career. He was in fact a solicitor’s clerk working from number 1 Raymond Buildings at Grays Inn, London. This is where this actual desk was used by Charles Dickens in 1827. The Charles Dickens desk is made of solid mahogany. It is a good quality standing clerk's desk. It was made in the Georgian period of about 1800. It has four fine turned legs, raised on brass castors. They are linked by an under tier, which was probably useful for storing the work in hand. It has a hand dovetailed single drawer with turned knob handles. The sloping leather top adjoins a flat galleried shelf...
