About the Item

Originally made for Hughes Aircraft, Fletcher Aviation offered these desks to the general public after Frank P. Fletcher acquired the patent in 1945. Originally based in Pasadena California, Fletcher Aviation was an aircraft manufacturer founded by three brothers, Wendell, Frank and Maurice Fletcher. The knowledge of Fletcher's background illustrates how his aviation engineering influenced the design of this executive desk which straddles the line of Art Deco and Mid-Century Modern. This vast desk emulates the streamlined shape on an aircraft's front, featuring three curvaceous edges that are finished on all sides, allowing this desk to sit anywhere in a room and be admired. This commanding piece is fabricated from Honduran Mahogany which displays a beautiful grain with contrasting stripes of various shades and intensity. The drawers all have cut-outs underneath to allow for them to open and close, without the added bulk of additional hardware, enabling the design to remain sleek and flush. In the center of the desk, there is a slim pencil drawer with a lock, the left has three equal sized drawers with a pull-out surface at the top. On the right side of the desk, there is another pull-out surface at the top, a drawer and a file drawer below. The base of this mighty desk is powder-coated steel, in a complementary deep brown which blends with the wood. On the inside of the middle stationery drawer, the metal Fletcher Desk emblem can be found with the Fletcher Aviation stamp and their slogan "putting wings on the world". The clean lines and minimal design of this piece make it appropriate for a number of locations, from Classic and contemporary homes to elegant executive offices to hip startups. It would also be great in a hospitality, retail or corporate location, such as a boutique hotel lobby, members club sign in area, workspace studio, CEO's office or in a luxe clothing emporium. Measurements: 29.25" H x 72" W x 46.5 " D Excellent vintage condition. As expected, minor signs of use commensurate with age are evident. Some minor scratches and scuffs.
