Large English Arts & Crafts Oak Squared Library Table, circa 1870

About the Item

A table with incredible presence and form, this unusual and most attractive English Arts & Crafts period library table is meant to be a centre piece to a large study or library, though it operates beautifully as a hall table in the centre of a very large entry space. With an early and possibly original surface throughout, there is a rich and glowing patina that makes the table magnetic visually - rich silky surfaces of rubbed shellac preserve the mellowed oak, now softened throughout from over a century of handling and polishing. The top is crafted with several solid oak planks with a bevelled edge that projects over a squared apron with carved repeating triangles along the lower edge. The apron tenons deeply into the large square corners, the severity of these corners softened with scrolled returns, the entire table raised over particularly Fine turned legs - the sharp rings, perfect swelling and overall effect is exemplary. A H-form stretched trestle base locks everything together permanently. It is a solid table that is intended to be actively used and enjoyed without concern, while presenting a powerful and unusual form that elevates and makes more interesting whatever setting it becomes a part of. Measurements: 28 1/2” H x 56” W x 52” D Condition report: Gorgeous patina to early rubbed shellac surface throughout; age appropriate wear throughout, surface burns and old scratches; some gapping to boards on top and chipping to feet. Retains original screws throughout and castors under feet. Overall in excellent original condition, a Fine presentation. We have many additional images available upon request.
