Late 17th Century Italian Walnut Wood Library Table

About the Item

This majestic library table was hand-carved in Italy during the late 1600’s. Three planks of rich walnut wood comprise the top that has been carved with a thin recessed molding along all four sides. A slight bend to the three hundred plus year old wood gives the table added character. Beneath the 89 ½ inch long top is an inset frieze with two drawers on each of the long sides. Each drawer has two thickly molded rectangular panels with round wooden pulls. There is a shaped iron escutcheon for a non-functional lock between the rectangular panels of each drawer. The base of the frieze has been carved with a quarter round molding, with a pair of open lyre legs below that provide a sturdy base. A thick beam stretcher attaches to each of the fretted legs via a dovetail lap joint, further strengthening the base. At almost 89 1/2 inches long and over 45 inches wide, our late 17th century Italian walnut library table will make a grand statement piece. Designed to be displayed as a free-standing table, it would be a fantastic addition to any office or library. The wood retains a rich patina, while the design of the table itself is an interesting mix of Spanish influenced lyre legs and rectilinear moldings characteristic of Northern Italian furniture.

  • 17th Century Spanish Walnut Wood Table with Single Plank Top
    Located in Dallas, TX
A beautifully crafted wooden table from Spain, the walnut was hand-carved at the end of the Renaissance (in the 1600’s). As is the case with most Spanish Renaissance tables, the 1 ½” thick single plank top rests upon tightly turned legs. The edges of the top do not have molding or carvings but receive added character from the large dovetail grooves that were used to construct the table. This table has framing beneath the top plank which houses three horizontally aligned drawers. Each drawer façade has an iron escutcheon in the shape of shield with two engrailed top edges. The keyplate is set within a foliate margent that is surrounded by several layers of molding. Identical carvings and iron plates can be seen on the opposite side of the table, which has faux drawer fronts. Beneath the belt are four turned legs connected by an H-stretcher. Our 17th century Spanish walnut table...
