Vanity by Dutch Modernist H. Wouda, 1924

About the Item

Modernist yellow vanity, Hendrik Wouda, H. Pander & Zonen, Netherlands, 1924. Painted pine, marble, silk. The Interbellum, the period between the two World Wars, was a time when culture Dutch blossomed. Architects, designers and artists set themselves the aim to shape a brighter, modern future by changing the way people live. The city of The Hague saw the rise of the so-called Hague School, a luxurious and modern design style. It is a variation of the international Art Deco style, recognizable for its straight lines and cubist shapes. This 7-piece bedroom set is an example of early The Hague School, recognizable by the symmetric composition, rather than the later (post 1926) asymmetric shapes. It is designed by Dutch designer Hendrik Wouda (1885–1946) and made by H. Pander & Zonen. This specific set was exhibited in 1924 at Pander’s Amsterdam store. It’s extremely rare to find a complete set in all original condition, with original paint and upholstery. Monique Teunissen and Albert Veldhuisen, Hendrik Wouda, Architect en meubelontwerper, Uitgeverij 010, Rotterdam, 1989, illustrated p. 12, no. 6. The other matching Wouda pieces, as shown in the context photos, are available in other listings. Together they would make a remarkable living room set.

Modernist Desk; Frits Spanjaard; The Netherlands; Holland; circa 1930; Hendirk Wouda; Pander; Haagse School; The Hague School; Writing Desk; Wood; Geometric Composition; Frits Spanjaard, influenced by Hendrik Wouda, designed balanced and simple pieces of furniture. His unique abstract style and refined use of composition, set him apart from other rationalist designers from The Hague School. The use of primary colours is a direct reference to De Stijl. Throughout his career Spanjaard, played with the application of colour, searching for contrast and dialogue between shapes. This table, together with the matching chair, are a fine example of this design attitude. It was part of the Exhibition "De Klare Lijn" curated by Boris Devis...
